Whitehorse on Q

whitehorseblog.jpg Luke Doucet is the Juno-nominated guitar hero who started out in the Vancouver band Veal before releasing a string of roots-rock solo records under his own name. Melissa McClelland is the folk pop singer/songwriter with a country lean who's released four solo records and collaborated with Sarah McLachlan. Melissa and Luke are already partners in life, and now they're musical partners too. They've set aside their solo careers to form a band called Whitehorse, which highlights each of their strengths and featured a cohesive, edgier rock sound. Whitehorse performed live as Q's Friday Live guests today. Hear their session and an interview with guest host Jim Brown below.

Q's Top 20 Albums of 2011: #1

1 - Bon Iver alternate.jpgAt long last... we arrive at #1 on Q's Top 20 Albums of 2011. And this year, we celebrate the stunning self-titled record and year had by the the pride of Eau Claire, Wisconsin... Bon Iver. It's a record that is both irresistible, and defies easy categorization. The project's creator, Justin Vernon makes the record soar with his striking falsetto and ability to use sound to create atmosphere and place. Bon Iver has continued to linger on our playlists all year, and we're pleased to place it atop our list. Justin was on Q twice this year - first, live in Studio Q, and second, at our live-audience show earlier this month in Toronto with The National. Watch the latter interview below, and read the full list of our favourite albums of the year after the jump.

Q's Top 20 Albums of 2011: #2

2 - Tom Waits.jpgTom Waits has the #2 album on Q's Top 20 Albums of 2011 for Bad as Me. With this album, surrounding himself with a cast of musicians including Keith Richards, Charlie Musselwhite, David Hidalgo and Mark Ribot, Tom Waits once again takes listeners on an esoteric journey through back-streets, bedrooms and battlefields where fortunes and romances are built and broken. Tom Waits talked to Jian about the record on Q earlier this year. Click here to revisit their conversation.

3 - Bjork.jpg
One of Iceland's greatest cultural exports -- Björk -- has the #3 record on Q's Top 20 Albums of 2011 for her innovative Biophilia. The record is not just a record... but also an app album, with accompanying iPad apps for each song with interactive elements to help teach listeners about musicology. But the technology aside, Björk shows her musical might once more, with newly-created instruments, stunning musical dynamism and a voice that never ceases to leave an impression. Jian sat down with Björk in New York city this past summer. Their wide-ranging conversation includes everything from her start in music, to her role as a political and environmental activist, to her ongoing fusion of music, technology and nature. Click here to listen to their full conversation. And watch Björk's video for the song "Crystalline" below.

Q's Top 20 Albums of 2011: #4

4 - Laura Marling.jpgBritish musician Laura Marling has the #4 album on Q's Top 20 Albums of 2011 for A Creature I Don't Know. This musical old soul's output has been impressive, given this record is her third and she's barely out of her teens. Marling has drawn comparison to Joni Mitchell, as well as to Fiona Apple, Fairport Convention, and even Leonard Cohen, and her previous two albums were shortlisted for the UK's coveted Mercury Prize. Click here to hear her interview and performances in Studio Q from this past September.

Q's Top 20 Albums of 2011: #5

5 - Fleet Foxes.jpg#5 on Q's Top 20 Albums of 2011 is a sophomore release from a band that carried such acclaim around with them from their first album that it seemed entirely possible the pressure would get the better of them. And boy did it not. The record is Helplessness Blues by Seattle's Fleet Foxes. Its mix of baroque-styled instrumentation and unmistakeable harmonies showcases both growth and the throwback element you love about this band. Robin and Skye from the band came into Studio Q for a conversation with Jian back in June. Watch that conversation here. Below, check out their video for the epic "The Shrine / An Argument".

Q's Top 20 Albums of 2011: #6

6 - Feist.jpgFeist is in at #6 on Q's Top 20 Albums of 2011 for her highly anticipated record Metals. The album combines fluid strings, reedy woodwinds (courtesy of Polaris shortlister Colin Stetson), a nod or two to the blues, great big stirring vocal choruses, and songs about life, death, creation, the elements and more. Feist was our Friday Live guest this past fall. Watch her performance of the song "Get It Wrong, Get It Right" below.
