Q Essay: Support your local fringe fest!

In today's opening essay, Jian salutes the good folks running fringe theatre festivals across the country, and encourages all arts supporters to check out a few emerging acts this summer.

"Smart writing, sharp acting, surprising design, compelling story, and unique staging. In short, so begins Fringe festival season in Canada," he says, going on to give nods to events in several cities.

"In the coming weeks, people all over Canada will once again be seduced by the energies, the dreams, the boldness and brilliance of emerging talent, both local and international."

Jian calls fringe theatre the "ultimate indie level of culture that deserves our support" and notes that many acts that start small go on to bigger things.

"Not long from now, you will likely be able to say: I saw them at the Fringe."
