Jian bids farewell to the long-running sitcom How I Met Your Mother in today's opening essay.

From its sharp and occasionally subversive writing to its seemingly genuine and heartfelt love of Canada, How I Met Your Mother was very much a show of its time.

"Over its 9 seasons How I Met Your Mother didn't have the cultural punch and celebrity of some of the sitcoms that came before it: Cheers, Seinfeld or the show it was most often compared to, particularly in its early years: Friends," Jian says. "That said, no one really, really despised it either."

"A fond farewell to How I Met Your Mother. You may have only occasionally blipped our cultural radar, but you were certainly a fun place to hang out."
