Q's Top 20: #7 - Josh Ritter

Josh Ritter nabs the #7 spot on Q's Top 20 Albums of 2013 for his very candid latest record, The Beast in Its Tracks. Just a few years ago, he was riding high after beating a nasty writers' block, which led to a breakthrough record -- So Runs The World Away -- full of literary story-songs, as well as the publication of his debut novel Bright's Passage.

But the intervening period in his life proved difficult on a personal level, and he turned his considerable songwriting skill to telling the story of the dissolution of a relationship... or, more appropriately, spinning that tale with some distance traveled and pain already in the past.

The Beast in Its Tracks is a brave, intimate recording, both sonically, and lyrically. It gets personal for him but remains universal in its appeal to us as listeners. For anyone who's lost love, gone through the darkness and found a way forward, or for anyone in the midst of those phases, this record is a true companion on the road back to feeling OK again.

Josh Ritter dropped by studio Q earlier this year to share the story behind this record and perform live. Stream the audio above, and watch the video below.
