In October, we turned to the bookworms among you to ask: what is the one novel that could change our nation? First, you chose the Top 40, then narrowed it down to the Top 10.

Now it's time for our celebrity panelists to advocate for one game-changing novel, and convince you that their pick deserves to be on your bookshelf.

Jian revealed this year's champions and their book of choice this morning. Here again are this year's top five . . .

  • Stephen Lewis defends: The Year of the Flood by Margaret Atwood
  • Samantha Bee defends: Cockroach by Rawi Hage
  • Wab Kinew defends: The Orenda by Joseph Boyden
  • Sarah Gadon defends: Annabel by Kathleen Winter
  • Donovan Bailey defends: Half-Blood Blues by Esi Edugyan

The debates air March 3 to 6, 2014 on CBC Radio, CBC-TV and online at CBC Books. But if you can't wait until then, get a sneak peek of their defences by listening to their chat with Jian, then head to the CBC Books site for more Canada Reads goodness!
