R.A. Dickey isn't a conventional athlete. From his "freak pitch" knuckleball to winning the Cy Young at age 38 to publishing a revealing memoir that delves into sexual abuse and religion, Dickey has embraced being unique.
Speaking about the decision to include his story as a victim of sexual abuse in his book Wherever I Wind Up: My Quest for Truth, Authenticity and the Perfect Kunckleball
, Dickey says, "If I was gonna share my story, I needed to share the darkest parts of it."
He found solace in religion and has learned to cope with tough
losses on and off the field, telling Jian that his current mantra is:
"How can I live the next five minutes as well as possible?"
Hear how he bounced back from a suicidal place, how he has learned to sit with pain and let it hurt a little bit, and why he wants to do more than just survive.
