Our culture seems to have some pretty mixed feelings about tomboys. On the one hand they are popular heroines, but then there are cases like this.

And until recently, there were some serious restrictions on women wearing clothing perceived as "menswear" in public.

One Q listener wrote in to say she had to ask her boss for permission to wear a pantsuit as recently as 1971!

At the same time, should women have to dress in a "masculine" way to be seen as confident and adventurous? Does celebrating tomboys implicitly devalue femininity?
