Kony 2012: Is simplification a necessary part of successful advocacy?

Q convened a debate on the Kony 2012 viral sensation. It's said to be the first real successful merging of international advocacy work and social media.
But, just as quickly as the video popped up on Facebook pages and twitter feeds, so did criticisms of the campaign. Many point to its inaccuracies and its overly simplified message of "capture Kony."
But, can such successful advocacy work ever avoid oversimplification? And can oversimplification do more harm than good?
