Today Jian spoke to German curator Roger Buergel, who criticized the international arts community's response to the detention of world-renowned Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, 53 days ago. Several countries (including the U.S. and Britain, but not Canada) and members of the international arts community have denounced China's treatment of Ai Weiwei. But Buergel -- a friend and former curator of the artist's work -- says artists themselves haven't done nearly enough to show their support -- and adds that artists may be glad to "be rid of Ai Weiwei."
Do you believe the art community is doing enough to show its support for Ai Weiwei? Should art institutions be involved in protesting his detention -- or should they leave that to governments?
