Can the word slut be empowering?

slutwalkforblog.jpgBack in January, Constable Michael Sanguinetti told a group of York University students that, "women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized." The officer has since apologized, but his words have inspired SlutWalk protests in Toronto last month, then Boston this past weekend, and soon, as many as 60 more marches in cities around the world.

Still, many feminists are objecting to the use of such a derogatory word, even in the context of a protest against sexist violence. Hear SlutWalk co-founder Heather Jarvis and Pornland author Gail Dines debate the use of the word slut on Q today, below, and tell us what you think:

Are SlutWalks empowering to women or an affront to feminist progress? Is the word "slut" being successfully reclaimed or is the Slutwalk movement inadvertently feeding the sexist views it is hoping to counter?
