Is Hollywood guilty of "whitewashing"?

Akiracover.jpgThe film hasn't even been made yet, but controversy is surrounding the Hollywood adaptation of the popular manga series Akira.

Critics accuse Hollywood of "whitewashing" the original after reports that high-profile white actors are being courted for the two lead Japanese characters.

Activist and actor George Takei (a.k.a. Mr. Sulu on Star Trek) is speaking out against the move and he told Jian this morning that Hollywood needs to start considering Asian-American actors as bankable stars. He's confident that will happen soon, and that we are at a tipping point when it comes to Asian representation on screen.

What do you think? Is Hollywood discriminating against Asian-American actors? If yes, are you confident things will change soon?
