Gaspereau Press and the Giller "problem"
Today on Q, Jian talked to Andrew Steeves, co-publisher of Nova Scotia's, Gaspereau Press.
That's the small press that published The Sentimentalists by Montreal-based author Johanna Skibsrud, which won the 2010 Giller Prize earlier this week.
Demand for the book shot up (a phenomenon known as the "Giller effect"), but Gaspereau's specialization in handcrafted books makes the publisher unable to produce more than 1000 copies of it per week.
Steeves' decision to stay small and not allow a larger publisher to help with production drew some criticism in the days following from people who think Gaspereau is holding Skibsrud back.
Steeves addressed this criticism in his conversation with Jian earlier today. Take a listen to what he had to say, and let us know where you stand!
