On the occasion of young Canadian Michael Cera's latest movie, Q Screenboy Jesse Wente names the top five Canadians in Hollywood -- OF ALL TIME. And some of them, will surprise you.
JESSE WENTE'S TOP FIVE CANADIANS IN HOLLYWOOD
1/ Mary Pickford - one of the first true stars of Hollywood, who had a huge influence on the industry, including being one of the forces behind the United Artists studio.
2/ Jack Warner - if the last name seems familiar, that's because its the Warner of Warner Brothers studio. Jack, along with his brothers, namely Sam, helped build the studio, develop technology for talking pictures, and ushered Hollywood into the new age. Now, they barely invite me to screenings.
3/ Lorne Michaels - although he technically made his star in New York and not Hollywood, he no doubt changed tv forever with his creation, "Saturday Night Live".
4/ William Shatner - number one in my heart, but fourth on this list. The single greatest Canadian entertainer of all time - that's right, I said it. From "Star Trek" to "TJ Hooker" to "Rescue 911" and "Boston Legal" he is the consummate performer. If he'd just started his own studio or reshaped late night tv, he'd be number one - give him time.
5/ Norman Jewison - directed and produced some of Hollywood's best movies of the '60s, '70s and '80s. One of the truly good guys in Hollywood, who has used cinema to tell humanist stories.
IF THIS LIST WENT TO TEN: Nell Shipman, Norma Shearer, Michael J. Fox, Leslie Nielsen, Donald Sutherland
