Today on Q, Washington Post dance critic Sarah Kaufman argued that The Nutcracker is an over-roasted old chesnut that needs to be retired. She says that ballet companies are becoming reliant on the yearly production and that that makes them play it safe when they should be taking risks to push ballet forward and make it relevant to today's audiences.
