Should able-bodied actors play physically challenged characters?

The casting of 13-year-old Abigail Breslin (of Little Miss Sunshine fame) in the role of Helen Keller in an upcoming Broadway production of The Miracle Worker is causing controversy on the Great White Way. Critics are arguing that an able-bodied actress should not have been cast without first auditioning a deaf or blind actress. What do you think? Are producers right that audiences prefer to see able-bodied actors in these roles? And if so, what's with that?
