This movie season is offering several critically lauded movies by women, but no female filmmaker has ever been honoured with the Academy Award for Best Director. Could history be made at the next Oscars? Q's Screenboy Jesse Wente gets his early picks in. (But that doesn't mean you can't add your own. Who would you like to see win an Oscar for her directing prowess?)
JESSE WENTE'S TOP FIVE WOMEN DIRECTORS TO WATCH - someone here has to win an Oscar in the next few years
1/ Sarah Polley - her first filmed received Oscar consideration and her next is an eagerly anticipated event
2/ Kelly Reichardt - a fascinating film maker, making movies outside the studio system in America, her last film "Wendy and Lucy" put her on the map, but don't miss "Old Joy", a simple and beautiful movie from a couple of years ago
3/ Courtney Hunt - her first film is the fantastic "Frozen River", which got her a nomination for the screenplay - can't wait to see what she does next
4/ Rubba Nadda - her second feature, "Cairo Time" just won an award at TIFF and opened across Canada - she could be Canada's next big film maker
5/ Tamara Jenkins - a continually interesting film maker who doesn't make nearly enough movies, her last "The Savages" was nominated for best screenplay
