Does ideology belong in books for children?

Some of the fiercest literary battles in recent years have taken place over what's appropriate in literature for children. Some would say the very purpose of most kids lit is to teach lessons and impart values, but where's the line between sharing social values and outright indoctrination? How political is too political in books for kids?

On today's show, we talked to the editors of Tales for Little Rebels: A collection of radical children's literature and to literary commentator Zsuzsi Gartner for their thoughts. What do you think? Are your kids learning their politics from the books they read? Is kids' lit today too laden with attempts to make us all better people when reading should first and foremost be fun?
