There's really no way around it: last night's Oscars were a joyless affair, utterly lacking in spontaneity, and dragged fruther down by the catatonia of James Franco and poor chemistry with his co-host Anne Hathaway. Last night was Oscars number 83 and as though feeling long in the tooth, planners attempted to inject some 21st century flavour into the proceedings. But instead of embracing a brave new world, it came off as slow and stilted as the speech of a certain English monarch portrayed in the year's Best Picture. The dreariness of the event was exacerbated by the utter predictability of the award winners. Why did lift off fail so spectacularly?
