A Fighting Chance

A Fighting Chance

Recounts how Australia built an Olympic sports system that's envied around the world, and what lessons Canada's troubled sports program can learn from the Australians' success.

Australia has finished ahead of Canada at recent Summer Olympic Games, mainly because of a decision to completely overhaul its sports system. Ironically, that decision was made after Australia won just six medals at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, a performance which Australians themselves describe as a “disaster”.

The documentary features interviews with athletes, coaches and sports officials, including David Ford, a three-time Olympian who trains in Australia; Canadian swimming legend Alex Baumann, who is now the CEO of Queensland Swimming; and Canadian weightlifter Maryse Turcotte. They all give their points of view and insights on the successes and failures of each country’s system.
