Tony Parsons joined the CBC News Vancouver team in April 2010. He is a well-known Canadian broadcaster whose career has spanned more than 50 years. His academic pursuits include studying Radio and Television Arts at Ryerson Institute in Toronto.
Born Tony Parsonage, he changed his name before his first broadcasting job as a country/western DJ at an Ontario radio station. He continued to work in radio until he took his first television job as a reporter at CFTO in Toronto.
He moved to Vancouver in 1975 when he landed the West Coast correspondent position for CTV National News. He was quickly offered the 6 p.m. anchor assignment with BCTV (now Global TV) where he stayed for 35 years. In 2003, Parsons was also named Vice-President of News for the station.
In 2002, the Confratellanza Italo-Canadese named Parsons Italo-Canadian of the Year. In 2004, he received the Bruce Hutchison Lifetime Achievement Award by the Jack Webster Foundation and in 2009, Parsons was inducted to the Broadcasters Hall of Fame. His first book, A Life in the News, was also published in 2009 and quickly became a bestseller in B.C.
Parsons continues to anchor the 10 p.m. newscast at Victoria based CHEK TV and also owns a portion of Vancouver restaurant The Poor Italian.
His interests include golf, playing classical guitar, fishing, travelling and reading. Parsons also donates his time to a number of local charitable organizations.
