Michael McAuliffe is CBC Radio's Asia Correspondent based in Bangkok,

Thailand. He was appointed to this new post in the spring of 2004,

having previously served as Middle East Correspondent based in Cairo,

Egypt.

His war-zone assignments have taken him to Bosnia, Croatia, Rwanda,

Burundi, Congo and Kosovo. He's also spent a significant amount of

time covering the on-going Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and more

recently, the rise of the bloody insurgency in post-invasion Iraq.

Since moving to Bangkok, his major assignments have included the

Pakistan earthquake which killed more than 80-thousand people,

and the Asian tsunami disaster. In 2005, his coverage of the tsunami

was recognized with a World Gold Medal from the New York Festivals.

Michael began his career with CBC Radio News as an editorial assistant

in 1983. He held a wide range of domestic posts in Toronto, Ottawa,

Whitehorse, Vancouver and Victoria prior to becoming a foreign

correspondent.

Michael is also a past recipient of the Michener Award for Meritorious

Public Service in Journalism, awarded for his four-year investigation

of the Canadian military's attempt to cover up the deaths of Somali

civilians during a peacekeeping mission there. His reporting led to

the creation of a federal public inquiry that forced the resignation

of Canada's Chief of Defence Staff.

Michael's reports can be seen and/or heard frequently on CBC Television as

well as CBC Radio.
