Mary Hynes began her career as a journalist in 1983 with United Press Canada. From 1984 to 1987, she worked overseas as a freelance sports writer/correspondent for CBC Radio, Broadcast News, Canadian Press, the Globe and Mail and Southam newspapers. In 1987, as a news and feature writer in the Globe and Mail's sports department, Hynes covered the 1988 Seoul Olympics and the subsequent Dubin Inquiry into drugs in sports, winning a Sports Canada Award. In 1989, Hynes came to CBC Radio One as the host of The Inside Track. The program won a Bronze Award at the New York Radio Festival in 1991 and was judged "CBC Radio/Best Weekly Show" in 1993.

In 1994, Hynes moved to TVO to co-host the daily current affairs program Studio 2. In 1997, she became host of Imprint, TVO's weekly literary program. She returned to CBC Radio One in 2000 to host the summer series Body and Soul, an exploration of the human body through medicine, culture, sociology and humour. Body and Soul won a Bronze Award at the New York Radio Festival in 2001. Hynes also hosted the Discovery Health Channel's Open Heart, a series of conversations about humanistic medicine. She has been a frequent and popular guest host on programs such as As It Happens and The Arts Today.

From 2003 to the present, Hynes has been the host of Tapestry, CBC Radio's weekly program about spirituality and the search for meaning. In 2006, the program was named Best Network Weekly in CBC Radio's Internal Awards. In 2007, Hynes's interview with musician Oliver Schroer won a Gabriel Award in the category Religious: National Release. In 2008, Hynes was awarded a Bronze World Medal by the New York Festivals in the category Best Personality: Network/Syndicated, for the Tapestry program "The Power and the Glory." In 2008 and 2009, Hynes's work was recognized by the Religion Communicators' Council, when the program was awarded two consecutive Wilbur Awards, for Tapestry: Rumi and Tapestry: Soul in the City.
