MacKinnon began her broadcasting career as a radio freelancer in Halifax before moving to Saint John, N.B. to become a host for CBC Radio.
In 1982, MacKinnon appeared on CBC Television, working out of Halifax as a national reporter for The Journal. MacKinnon has been with The National since 1995, first as a national reporter based out of Halifax. She moved to Toronto in 1997 to cover current affairs for the program, before leaving for Ottawa to report on current affairs and politics. Since 2001, MacKinnon has covered three prime ministers, three federal elections and five federal leadership campaigns during her time in Canada's capital.
MacKinnon's work has been recognized by several prominent organizations. She has been nominated for three Gemini awards and has won two national science writing awards and a Gracie award. She also won an RTNDA award for a series of stories on the blood scandal in Canada.
