Despite the early morning hours, night owl Jill Dempsey has worked as a newsreader on Metro Morning-with a few breaks-since 1991.
Dempsey got her start at Toronto's City-TV, working behind the scenes as a writer and producer. She came to CBC in June 1989, anchoring Calgary's late night news. After two months she was tapped as a backup host for CBC Newsworld, a relationship she maintained for six years after she returned to Toronto.
Dempsey's move to radio came in 1991 when she joined CBC Radio One's Metro Morning. After two years of getting up at the crack of dawn, Dempsey took over the daytime newscasts. Besides reading and writing the news, Dempsey has filled in on Fresh Air, Radio Noon and Here and Now. Dempsey was seconded to the position of co-host on The World at Six with Barbara Smith from the fall of 2002 to the spring of 2003.
Dempsey has a B.A. in Political Science from York University, and for several years she has also been an instructor in the Radio and Television Arts program at Ryerson University.
Somehow, despite all that, Dempsey finds the time to indulge her wanderlust. So far, she has traveled in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Europe, Mexico and of course Canada. She enjoys sports, adores gardening, loves spending time cooking gourmet meals for friends and family, and-true to her Northern Ontario roots-loves the outdoors.
