Frank Koller explores the world of economics, work, family and community for CBC Radio News. He chronicles the human face of Canada's economy as it faces opportunities and pressures from globalization.
From 1999 to 2005, Frank was U.S. Correspondent for CBC Radio News, based in Washington. Prior to his U.S. posting, Frank's focus was on Asia, where, from 1985 to 1998, he reported for the CBC from nearly every country in the region.
In the U.S., Frank covered everything from the Sept. 11th terrorist attacks on the ground in New York City to the 2000 U.S. election recount. Internationally, he covered Argentina's economic collapse in 2001, the May 1998 riots which led to the resignation of Indonesia's President Suharto, and the 1989 democracy protests in Tienanmen Square.
From 1988 to 1996, Frank was foreign editor and documentary producer for CBC Radio's Sunday Morning. In 1992, he joined CBC-TV's business program Venture for a special on Canada's future in Asia, reporting from Thailand and Singapore.
From 1985 to 1988, Frank was an accredited foreign correspondent in Jakarta, Indonesia. He reported from across Asia for CBC Radio and for newspapers around the world. In his capacity as a photojournalist, his clients included the Far Eastern Economic Review, Newsweek, the Globe and Mail, and Canadian Yachting.
Frank has taught journalists in Indonesia and Cambodia on behalf of the Canadian Journalists for Freedom of Expression (CJFE) and the Asian Institute of Broadcasting (Kuala Lumpur).
In 1991, Frank was awarded a Media Fellowship from the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada, spending three months in Vietnam. In 1996, his documentary profile of Japanese author Kenzaburo Oe won the Media Award from the Canadian Association for Community Living. And in 1998 and in 2007 (as part of a CBC Investigative Team), he won the Excellence in Health Reporting Award from the Canadian Nurses Association.
Frank began with CBC Radio in Ottawa in the early 1980s. Prior to that, he was a professional jazz musician and recording artist for 10 years. He received a Master's Degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology after graduating from Carleton University in Ottawa in Civil Engineering.
