Al Karim began his stage career as a dancer having trained various forms of the art including jazz and kathak. A popular dance instructor with the Toronto Board of Education for several years, Karim has choreographed staged performances emphasizing a fusion of dance styles for both television and live audiences.

His theatrical credits include Toronto productions of The Poor Immigrant and The Mousetrap. Karim has appeared in such films as Masala (1992), The Kite (2006) and most recently Daylight Savings.
