Democracy Derailed

The Fifth Estate

From 1993. Violence is surging the streets of Haiti. The military and mobs rule the country while the democratically elected president Jean Bertrand Aristide remains in exile. Thousands have died in the violence following a military coup and the military has installed its own prime ministers in the interim, Jean-Jacques Honorat and Marc Bezin. Now tens of the thousands of Haitian refugees are fleeing to the United States. The Fifth Estate examines how much of the problems in Haiti are the fault of the U.S.
