James Turk is the executive director of the Canadian Association of University Teachers, which represents academic staff, including scientists. He argues that scientists should be free to speak to the public about their taxpayer-funded research, and scientific innovation will not flourish if funding is only granted to projects with a practical or economic purpose. In this video Turk reads part of a media protocol introduced by Prime Minister Stephen Harper's government shortly after it was elected in 2008.
