In the past, groups like the Canadian Centre for Child Protection have worried about children being lured out of their homes by strangers they meet online, and risking sexual harm. Now Signy says, with the threat of ‘cappers’ and the crime of sextortion, children do not have to leave their homes to be harmed. Teenagers are especially at risk, she says, because their “their brain is not [fully] developed, they’re impulsive, sexually curious and it’s a lethal combination.”
