Early in the new year, it was confirmed that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez would not attend his inauguration ceremony, set for January 10th. The National Assembly wanted to allow him more time to recover from cancer surgery in Cuba. But the opposition urged that Mr. Chavez be declared absent, and an interim leader sworn in. On January 9th, Carol spoke with New Yorker staff writer Jon Lee Anderson, well known for his profiles of Latin American leaders, including Castro, Pinochet, and Chavez.
