Author Carol Bishop-Gwyn on "The Pursuit of Perfection"

As It Happens

As the founding artistic director of the National Ballet of Canada, Celia Franca worked miracles. And when she died in 2007, at the age of eighty-five, she was a Canadian cultural icon. But Celia Franca also made a lot of enemies -- and "frenemies" -- during her twenty-four years at the helm of the National Ballet. Her life is now the subject of a revealing biography entitled The Pursuit of Perfection, by Carol Bishop-Gwyn, a writer and dance historian who lives in Toronto. The book is nominated for this year's Charles Taylor Prize.
