Engel/Findley Award: Ricci

As It Happens

Nino Ricci was this year's recipient of the Writers' Trust Engel/Findley Award. The award is named for late Canadian novelists Marian Engel and Timothy Findley, and recognizes the body of work of a writer who is mid-career. While he may be mid-career, Nino Ricci is anything but middle-of-the-road: he won a Governor General's award in 1990 for The Lives of Saints and another in 2008 for The Origin of the Species. He was also a Giller nominee for Where She Has Gone, the final book in his Lives of Saints trilogy. We reached Nino Ricci at home in Toronto.
