Edmund de Waal is an English ceramicist whose ancestors were incredibly wealthy. By the end of WWII pretty much all that was left of the family fortune was a collection of Japanese carvings, called netsuke, and it is from these that de Waal created his popular memoir "The Hare With Amber Eyes."
