Calgary Stampede to test sidesaddle racing after 2018 chuckwagon races

The Homestretch

Women's barrel racing has become a big part of the Calgary Stampede, with riders and horses circling three barrels and galloping across the finish line as fast as they can. But back in the day, women used to ride horses side saddle to accommodate their voluminous skirts and to protect their modesty. That heritage will be showcased at a new event at the Stampede this year. It will happen right after the chuckwagon races, only on the first weekend of the Stampede. Lee McLean has been riding sidesaddle for more than 50 years and is part of the new event. She spoke with host Doug Dirks.
