White Coat Black Art Navigating the World of Medicine from a Wheelchair (Extended interview) Dec 14, 2012 | 14:39Steve Daniel is a second-year med student at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine. But before that, he did four tours of duty in Bosnia, Croatia and Afghanistan with the Canadian Armed Forces. In 2005, the former parachute instructor had a free-fall accident while conducting a course and was paralyzed instantly. Three years later, he competed at the Beijing Paralympics in arms-only rowing. And it was there he met a fellow athlete who inspired him to pursue medicine. Brian talks to him about navigating the world of medicine from a wheelchair.

Her 14-year-old son Derek has a rare form of epilepsy. His seizures can be controlled by one drug -- called Zarontin. Without it, he could die. As she told Brian, via skype, it's an older drug which is now impossible to find in Canada.
