Applications Still in Review
Yesterday, we told you about a demonstration outside the Qalipu band office in Corner Brook. About a hundred people showed up to voice their concerns about what's happening with the enrollment process for the new Mi'kmaq band. They're worried because tens of thousands of applications have been put in storage. And no one knows what's going to happen to them. Band chief Brendan Sheppard has asked for an extension from the federal Aboriginal Affairs department so that the reviewing of applications can continue. Tom Rideout is independent chair of the enrollment committee for the Qalipu Mi'kmaq First Nation band. Up until recently, he and the four other committee members were responsible for reviewing those applications.
