July 01st, the town of Canso will be amalgamated with the municipality of the district of Guysborough. The community of Canso is one-hundred eleven years old. It has a history that has an impact across the nation and, in fact, it's a storied history and there's a book about it.

In his latest report Jacques LaPointe says the district has "a poor culture of infection prevention and control." He says it may have contributed to a deadly outbreak of C-Difficile. Lapointe is also critical of provincial health officials for not properly overseeing its prescription drug monitoring program. And he says the overall response to earlier recommendations by his office is poor, especially in the education department.

The District Health Authority has decided to lay off six people called Counsellor Attendants. Four of them work in withdrawal maintenance or detox, one in opiate recovery, and one in the Day program. The Health Authority says, the attendants don't have the training and credentials needed for the work they were doing. It says they will be replaced with workers more suited to the job requirements. Murray MacNeil and Margaret Graham are worried.... not just about their own futures... but about the quality of addiction treatment. MacNeil has 10 years experience in detox, Graham 22 years. They spoke with CBC's Joan Weeks earlier today.
