Statistically,drivers aged 80-plus almost have the accident rate of the most dangerous driving demographic ... the under 24s.     As a boy in pre-war Austria, Georg Tintner played the piano, sang with the Vienna Boys Choir, and composed his own music. By the time World War Two broke out, he was also a conductor. But Georg Tintner was a conductor with Jewish roots. And so, after the Anschluss in 1938, he was fired. By 1942, Mr. Tintner made his way to New Zealand, and for the better part of the next forty-five years of his life, he served as a conductor across New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. But in 1987, he moved to Halifax, where he would leave his mark as the conductor of Symphony Nova Scotia. He died in Halifax on October 2, 1999.

One of the toughest moments was attending a ceremony on the tarmac at Kandahar airport. Nanette made it home safely and bravely volunteered for a second tour of duty last year. She's stationed at CFB Petawawa in Ontario. She's written a song to thank her family and friends for helping her get through some tough times, and joined us on Skype.

She's currently studying international relations at St. Thomas University and is representing the Maritimes in the pageant.

Island Morning George Matthews calls his 1000th NHL Hockey Game Feb 22, 2013 | 6:54Summerside's George Matthews celebrated an anniversary last weekend. He put on his headset and called his one thousandth NHL hockey game... all of them as the voice of the Columbus Blue jackets. Many Islanders will remember George's work here on the Island with the Summerside Capitals, Charlottetown Abbies or the short lived P.E.I. Senators. Others will remember him as Mr. Matthews, the teacher at Summerside Intermediate who indulged his unique talent of being an elite play by play announcer at night. It was Doug McLean who gave George his big break, it was his unique talent and knowledge of the game that's kept him in the broadcast booth for 12 seasons. Island morning caught up with him yesterday.

Last week, an RV arrived in Halifax, carrying 49 abandoned dogs from an overcrowed shelter in California. Within a few days the RV will return, this time carrying more than 50 cats destined for PEI. Some people have questioned the decision, since animal shelters in the Maritimes already have lots of abandoned pets awaiting adoption. Melissa Parsons is a 2nd year student at the Atlantic Vet College in Charlottetown. She and her friends have found homes for all of the cats. Island Morning's Pat Martel reached Melissa to find out more.
