Chief Jamie Thomas - Federal Court Ruling
A ruling by the Federal Court in Ottawa this week could have a profound effect here on Prince Edward Island. The Native Council of PEI represents off-reserve Aboriginal people across the province and has 15-hundred registered members. The Federal Court has ruled that Metis and non-status Indians fall under federal jurisdiction under the Constitution. That means Ottawa must recognize those groups as "indians"... and they are entitled to the same constitutional rights as people living on-reserve. And while the decision could be appealed, it could have a major impact on 600-thousand aboriginal people across Canada. Jamie Thomas is chief and president of the Native Council of PEI. She joins us on the phone.
