Business rights versus treaty rights: uranium in northern Quebec
Strateco Resources believes it's sitting on a massive deposit of uranium in northern Quebec. But they need to do some exploratory work to be sure. They have most of the necessary permits, but the company's been waiting on the province since August 2011. The Cree First Nation is against the project. And in order to get the green light, the company need's the Cree written consent. Strateco went to Quebec's Superior Court this week. They want to force the provincial government to make a decision on the project, and they want the requirement for the Cree's consent tossed out. John Paul Murdoch is the secretary of the Grand Council of The Cree. Denis Boucher is a spokesperson for Strateco Resources.
