Jack's furious outburst at the announcement of Aliena's marriage gets him thrown into the monastery's punishment cell. Ellen helps Jack escape from the very cell where his father Shareburg was held, and after he and Aliena share a single night of passion, he leaves England for France to study the higher arts of architecture. Ellen then appears at Aliena's wedding with Alfred and curses it with bitterness and impotence. Her curse is effective: Alfred is impotent with Aliena, and his frustration leads to his beaten wife being forced to sleep on the floor like a dog.

In Kingsbridge, another argument over succession breaks out: the issue of who will succeed Tom as master-builder. Tom wants Jack and Alfred to be friends, but their rivalry over their work lives and Aliena is too intense. That night, Alfred destroys Jack's beautifully carved gargoyles in a fit of drunken rage. Next morning Jack receives a painful rejection from Aliena; his enthusiastic courting was too like William Hamleigh. News of Alfred's destruction is the last straw and a long-delayed epic fight breaks out between them, destroying several months' worth of work on the cathedral. Tom fines Alfred, but tells Jack he must leave. Desperate to remain associated with the cathedral, Jack takes up Philip's offer to work in the priory and, much against his mother Ellen's wishes, becomes a novice monk.

Despite Waleran's jibes, Philip goes to see the King at Lincoln. He's accompanied by Richard as a Royal supporter, and Jack as spokesman for the cathedral. Occupied by the war, King Stephen refuses Philip's requests for justice and a new license, and -- frightened by Jack's appearance, another echo of his prophetic dream -- quietly orders the young man killed.
