Souris (pop. 1,248) is the largest urban centre in this rural district, which lies in the northeastern tip of P.E.I. Potatoes are grown in the interior, but the big potato story in the district is AgraWest, a potato-granule, potato-flour production plant in Souris with about 80 employees, which is a major employer in the region. Other major industries include a tuna and lobster fishery out of North Lake.
Government investment in this region has been relatively heavy, with the provincial government investing millions to kick-start the AgraWest plant in 1997, including a $16-million equipment loan. The provincial and federal governments also put up $55,000 to refurbish the Elmira Railway Museum, which is part of a trio of major tourism attractions in the district, the others being the East Point Lighthouse and the Fisheries Museum and beach at Basin Head.
The closing of the emergency department in Souris is likely to be an issue in this district.
