NORTH RIVER - RICE POINT (16)

Candidates:

PC: Donna Butler
Liberal: Ron MacKinley
NDP: Marlene Hunt

Current MLA: Ron MacKinley (LIB), Leader of the Opposition

Riding Profile: This riding is a mix of urban, suburban and rural. The major urban centre is the amalgamated community of Cornwall (pop. 4,412). As well as being a bedroom community for Charlottetown Cornwall has a major retail centre of its own. The future of this retail centre is in question because it relies to some degree on traffic from the Trans-Canada Highway which passes through the centre of the town. There is talk of diverting the highway because traffic in the area is considered at dangerous levels.

The riding extends down to the Northumberland Strait and well into the centre of the province, where it contains some quality farmland and minor tourist attractions.

Political History: Voters in this area, formerly 2nd Queens, have been represented by potato farmer Ron MacKinley since he was first elected in a by-election in Dec. 1985. During the 2000 general election MacKinley was the only Liberal to be elected to Province House and was the only opposition member during the latest session of the Legislature.
