GLEN STEWART - BELLEVUE COVE (7)

Candidates:

PC: David McKenna
Liberal: Eric Ellsworth
NDP: Jane MacNeil

Current MLA: Pat Mella (PC), Provincial Treasurer

Riding Profile: This is an urban riding largely comprised of the amalgamated town of Stratford (pop. 6,314), one of the fastest growing areas in the province, almost eight per cent in the years 1996 to 2001.

Improvements to the Hillsborough Bridge have attracted many commuters from Charlottetown to live here. A good portion of the newcomers are building large, new homes to mix in with the more modest bungalows which are more common. The riding is facing many problems as it struggles to provide the infrastructure for a growing population.

A large, new retail centre on the TransCanada Highway is part of the growth of the area.

Political History: This election marks the end of Pat Mella's career in provincial politics. In the general election held on March 29, 1993, she was the only member of the Progressive Conservative party to be elected, and was the only member of the opposition for three and a half years. Since being re-elected in Nov. 1996, Pat Mella has been the provincial treasurer, and chair of the treasurary board.
