Unemployment has been a problem on P.E.I. for generations. Outside of the occasional month or two, the unemployment rate on the Island has been in the double digits since at least the 1970s. At times it has climbed over 15 per cent.
While unemployment is a long-term problem on P.E.I., it is often viewed only in the short term, with the focus on the numbers produced monthly by Statistics Canada.
With Jobs Wanted, CBC P.E.I. is making an effort to take a longer-term look at unemployment, and to recognize the fact that double digit unemployment is more than just a number. It represents thousands of Islanders looking for a job to support themselves and their families.
