It's that time of year when the glitter is no sooner off the tree, then it's on the Hollywood red carpet. It's awards season for the entertainment industry.  And the big kick-off is January 25th with the Golden Globe Awards. They're given out annually to the film and television industry by the revered but enigmatic Hollywood Foreign Press Association. (HFPA) But just who are they exactly? Legitimate press or moochers with no more journalism skills than a bunch of autograph hounds?  Vikram Jayanti, Academy Award winning filmmaker, (When we were Kings) sets out to tell all in his highly amusing and lively disclosure.

Dealing with a press organization and getting information on a group that once bestowed its coveted prize to Pia Zadore, was no easy task.  "Nobody, not even their publicist would talk to us", says Jayanti , but he spent months challenging the legitimacy of the organization and its members.  He reveals that this cosseted group who wields such clout, and is supposedly so international requires its member (only 96 in all) to be residents of Southern California.  Jayanti claims that members aren't so much full time journalists, (many have to support themselves with secondary jobs), as full time movie fans more concerned about getting their pictures taken with a star, than watching the films they'll choose to honor. "What's different about the Golden Globes is that you're dealing with people who are outside the industry, who are essentially bottom feeders", says John Powers LA Weekly film critic.

Appearances from Hollywood's heavyweights like Angelina Jolie, Shirley Maclaine, and Jack Nicholson, as well as interviews with top entertainment journalists, all contribute to the great fun of watching a golden icon of celebrity success become deeply tarnished.
