THE FASTEST MAN ON NO LEGS
repeating Sunday August 3 at 8pm ET on CBC Newsworld
The exclusive story of the man nicknamed "The Blade Runner". At the Beijing Olympics, will a double amputee sprinter running on hi-tech metal blades take on the world's best able-bodied athletes?
Oscar Pistorius was born without bones in his lower legs, and was 11 months old when his parents made the painful decision to have his legs amputated. In their wildest dreams, they never thought he'd later sprint his way into the record books. At the age of 17, he won the sprint gold medal at the 2004 Paralympics in Athens.
Since his victory, Pistorius has not only challenged preconceptions of his disability, but the International Amateur Athletics Association's decision to bar him from able-bodied competition. In May, his appeal was upheld when Switzerland's Court of Arbitration for Sport accepted his plea that his blades do not give him an unfair advantage.
The Fastest Man With No Legs captures one man's determined spirit, as he trains to overcome all obstacles in the hopes of racing in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
