repeating Monday April 28, 2008 at 10pm PT on CBC Newsworld

Afghanistan: Choice for Women is a combined portrait of two exceptional women in a country of men. Habiba Sorabi has gone down in Afghan history for becoming the nation's first woman governor. Aisha Habibi, also known as "Commander Kaftar", is a legend. Many Afghans think she doesn't exist and that this woman who became a warlord is only make-believe.

Far from Kabul and the government, through in the everyday life of these two women who have nothing in common, we discover the life of a people who have been left destitute by 30 years of war and who are taking their first steps on a path to democracy in a landscape of forgotten, yet stunning beauty.

The governor painstakingly tries to establish democracy in Bâmyân where the Taliban destroyed the famous Buddhas. Commander Kaftar rules in autocracy in the distant Saijan Valley, living as if the war was still going on or as if it would break out tomorrow.
