Guest Post: Will Stroet on his New Album “Just Imagine”

Oct 15, 2013

I'm excited about my new album, "Just Imagine," which was largely inspired by my three-year-old daughter, Ella, who already has a vivid imagination. Ella was the inspiration for my songs, "Daddy Daughter Day," "Ella's Umbrella" and "Daddy's Lullaby." On this album, I've also written songs about the things that Ella and her friends love to do, like riding tricycles, colouring, swimming, playing with trains and eating fruit!

I love being a dad. It's been the best life-changing experience and has really influenced how I write music for kids. My new album focuses on kids' use of creativity in play and in building an understanding of the world around them. Kids are blessed with an amazing sense of creativity that can so easily be lost in today's fast-paced and technology-driven society. Their imagination plays a vital role in helping them understand their reality as well as things less tangible, such as history (dinosaurs and medieval times) and the future (space travel). I believe that kids should have time every day to just explore, create, imagine and play.

When I write songs for kids, I get to tap into my imagination in a way that comes naturally to kids but is challenging for most adults. You have to free your mind from daily worries and constraints that discourage creativity and just imagine. As I approach my 1000th performance for kids, I think back to the imaginative and creative play that I've witnessed during my shows. There are many kids who come to my shows with ukuleles or toy instruments and play along with me the whole time. I have also heard from a number of parents that kids love to re-enact my shows at home (and have seen many funny videos too)! These experiences and stories are among the most gratifying parts of my work.

I hope that my music sparks kids' imaginations so they can create a future that is inspiring and fulfilling. When you combine creativity with determination, anything is possible.

It's like what I say in the chorus of the title track, "Just Imagine":
If you imagine it
If you work at it
If you never quit
Well, just imagine!
