Power to the (Preschool) People

why_largeimage.jpgPreparing kids for school is at the heart of every decision we make at Kids' CBC. Experts agree that self-confidence and literacy skills are two cornerstones of school readiness, and that's why we're home to the "Kids' CBC Word Power Hour." It's a daily double bill of multiple-award-winning educational programming featuring "SuperWHY!" followed by "What's Your News?"

We have research on Super WHY! that shows what learning happens when kids view it on TV or participate online, and the results are great. You can read more on those results here.

"What's Your News?" helps to empower children and build their confidence by telling their stories. According to the show's co-creator, Chris Dicker, "Our goal was to give children a voice and to help their transition from their home and family environment into the wider world...It celebrates and honours a child's experience of just being a child."

Kim Wilson, Creative Head of CBC Children's Programming, was behind the drive for literacy and empowerment. "We launched the Kids' CBC Power Hour because literacy is such an important area of learning. Not only can we pair two of our best programs, but also surround them with Kids' Canada segments that reinforce that learning. And the name 'Word Power Hour' sends a message to our youngest viewers, too, by expressing to them the power of words. Preschoolers love to learn and giving them ways to celebrate learning around literacy is just a natural fit for us at Kids' CBC."

The "Kids' CBC Literacy Power Hour" is part of our five-hour block of commercial-free kids' programming [link to: http://www.cbc.ca/parents/feature/schedule.php] and can be seen every weekday from 9:00 am to 10:00 am.
